Pharmacist's Real Life Experience
with Topamax
I'm
a pharmacist/pharmacy manager at Walgreens and fed up with how neurologists
have treated me and others that I visit with at the counter.
You are completely right about Topamax on your web page.
One neurologist at the Headache Clinic had me taking 400mg of Topamax, along
with about eight other prescriptions. None of them worked, and my neurologist
acted like I was crazy when I told her!
And imagine trying to work as a pharmacist on all that crap!!...Especially
the Topamax. That stuff made it impossible to speak, think or function. Add to
that a bunch of other horrible medicines prescribed by neurologists and you have
yourself one hot mess!!!!
I did my research and found your Migraine
Defense product (thank God!!). As
a pharmacist, I was never big on natural medications but it has really helped.
Thank you so much for all that you do for migraineurs!!
Sincerely,
Rachelle
Topamax
Topamax is the most widely prescribed migraine prophylactic drug available.
It is also the leading migraine drug with the most known damaging
side effects.
Are the Risks and Low Efficacy Worth It to You?
Considering Topamax is covered by many insurance plans and prescribed by doctors,
most people who hold a prescription will have it filled without first learning
about the implications and risks of taking this drug and not know how they may
be affected by the known side effects.
Is insurance paying for your migraine drugs?
No matter what you currently think you know about Topamax, for your sake and
that of your loved ones, you should read this important message to help you make a knowledgeable decision about what you take for migraine prevention.
Taking Topamax (topiramate) is a Choice
We
all know how devastating migraines can be and how they often interrupt life.
You may find yourself in a desperate situation where you are willing to take
any risk for the slim chance that your migraines will end or at least be reduce
to a tolerable number.
Anti-seizure mediations such as Topamax have been tried for many years as
a last resort in hopes that they may work on the brain to at least make
a person unaware that a migraine is occurring. Today we know that through extensive
marketing campaigns to doctors and patients, many doctors, perhaps not even aware
of the risks or history of the drug, often prescribe Topamax to patients whom
they see for the first time.
It should important for you to know when making a decision to try Topamax
or stay on it that the drug has not changed, only the marketing campaign changed
- the risks are still the same.

Your Brain On
Topamax
Topamax works to alter the chemistry of your brain. Topamax work in an
area called the temporal lobes which are apart from the actual migraine center.
Altering brain chemicals in these areas can cause changes in a person's personality,
his or her ability to think, make decisions, remember words and names, learn
new things, and speak correctly. The higher the dosage, the more likelihood that
these problems will occur.
According to reports submitted to the FDA, the functions most
likely to be impaired include:
• cognitive
reasoning (thinking)
• short term memory (ability to learn new things, store information,
and recall events) • attention (staying focused) • concentration (thinking clearly)
• word
formation (saying the right words)
• and organization of thoughts (what to do next and what is the
answer to a question).
"Dumbing
down" has been used as an appropriate term to describe the effect Topamax
has on a person.

Topamax
Clinical Report
Side effects stopped the trials.
Topamax trials were abruptly stopped by the manufacturer
when noticeable
side effects became all too obvious to ignore or explain away.
By stopping their own trials, a pharmaceutical company can legally avoid
providing full disclosure of side effects to the FDA because the results
of the trial do not become part of the overall product report submitted to the
FDA.
Topamax Publication (7517114 02T566 © OMN 2005) lists only the most common
adverse events that may occur while taking Topamax (see side bar).

How Well Does Topamax
Work for Migraines?
Topamax
Works About 35% of the Time According to Topamax's Own Research

Topamax
certainly works for some of the people some of the time. The results of a
trial of 1,700 people who suffered an average of 5.5 migraines per month showed
at the end of a six month period that by
using 200 mg of Topamax a day the average person could expect to reduce
the number of migraines by just two per month.
"The primary end point [the end of six months
of continued use to determine the effect] of the pivotal trials was changed from
a baseline in mean monthly migraine frequency. TOPAMAX 50 mg BID (100 mg/day)
effectively reduced migraines by 2.1 attacks per month from a baseline of approximately
5.5 migraines per month in both studies vs 0.8 and 11 with placebo." from Topamax
Prescribing Information
It is recommended to doctors that a patient take Topamax for six months
with increases in the dosage to a point that may reach a level of 400 mg per
day by the end of that time in order to see if Topamax will work an average
of
37% of the time in preventing a patient's migraines.
In contrast, Migraine Defense can show excellent results in four to six weeks.
The
Type of Migraine May Determine Best Remedy
Topamax is Over-Prescribed
Intensive
Topamax marketing campaigns directed at doctors and other
advertisements directed at patients has been the number one reason for its increase
in use. During the last several years, the makers
of Topamax have paid millions of dollars to settle government fines for misrepresenting
Topamax.

Topamax Side Effects
Facts About Side Effects:
Drug companies can and do stop trials that reveal side effects in order
to avoid reporting them to the FDA when making application for drug approval.
These side effects are later released as "postmarketing
side effects".
For example, personality
disorder (a major deviation from normal patterns of behavior) is listed
as a postmarketing side effect of Topamax (topiramate) that has a high probability
of occurring frequently, see The
SIDER Side Effect Resource for a complete list of more than 180 different
reported side effects.
Why risk the side effects when you have a safe alternative?
Cognitive/Neuropsychiatric Adverse Events Adverse
events most often associated with the use of TOPAMAX® were related to the
central nervous system and were observed in both the epilepsy and migraine populations.
Cognitive Related Dysfunction (e.g. confusion, psychomotor slowing, difficulty with concentration and attention, difficulty with memory, speech, or language problems, particularly word finding difficulties).
Psychiatric Behavioral Disturbances (e.g. depression or mood problems)
Somnolence and Fatigue (e.g. drowsiness, sleepy, tired)
Kidney Stones: An explanation for the association of TOPAMAX® and kidney stones may lie in the fact that topiramate is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.
FDA Instructions for Doctors:
Patients should be warned about the potential for somnolence, dizziness, confusion,
and difficulty concentrating and advised not to drive or operate machinery.
Reporting Topamax Side Effects:
You may report side effects
to the FDA at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/ or 1-800-FDA-1088 (1-800-332-1088).

FDA Reported Side Effects
Numbness and tingling
This is known as paresthesia and is the most common side effect of TOPAMAX. People
have described this as numbness or "pins and needles," most often in
the arms or legs.
Fatigue
Some people may feel tired while taking TOPAMAX. More people reported fatigue
during the early stage of treatment.
Weight loss
Some people may have weight loss while taking TOPAMAX. This seems to be related
to the dose of TOPAMAX taken.
Difficulty with concentration attention and difficulty with memory
TOPAMAX may make it hard to concentrate. Some people may have memory recall issues.
This reaction varies, but people have described it as "difficulty finding
the right word" or "losing my train of thought."
Other common TOPAMAX side effects are loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea,
and taste change.
Warnings and Precautions
TOPAMAX® may cause eye problems. Serious eye problems include: sudden
decrease in vision with or without eye pain and redness; blockage of fluid in
the eye causing increased pressure in the eye (secondary angle closure glaucoma).
These eye problems can lead to permanent loss of vision if not treated. You should
call your healthcare professional right away if you have any new eye symptoms.
TOPAMAX® may cause decreased sweating and increased body temperature (fever).
People, especially children, should be watched for signs of decreased sweating
and fever, especially in hot temperatures. Some people may need to be
hospitalized for this condition.
TOPAMAX® may cause suicidal thoughts or actions. Pay attention
to any changes and call your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms,
especially if they are new, worse, or worry you: thoughts about suicide or dying,

feeling agitated or restless, panic attacks, trouble sleeping (insomnia),
new or worse irritability,
acting aggressive, being angry or violent, acting on dangerous impulses,
an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania), or other unusual changes
in behavior or mood.
Serious risks associated with TOPAMAX® include lowered bicarbonate levels
in the blood resulting in an increase in the acidity of the blood (metabolic
acidosis). Symptoms could include hyperventilation (rapid, deep breathing), tiredness,
loss of appetite, irregular heartbeat, or changes in the level of alertness.
Chronic, untreated metabolic acidosis may increase
the risk for kidney stones or bone disease.
TOPAMAX® may affect how you think, and cause confusion, problems
with concentration, attention, memory, or speech, depression or mood problems,
tiredness, and sleepiness.
Do not stop taking TOPAMAX® without first talking to your doctor. Stopping

vomiting.

loss of appetite, nausea, taste change, diarrhea, weight loss, nervousness, and
upper respiratory tract infection.
These are not all the possible side effects of TOPAMAX®. For more information,
